If you’re ready to get back to training and working out after a break, here are a few elements to include in a successful comeback strategy:
1. Examine the Why.
There are two parts to examining the why. First, think about what led to the break. Were the circumstances within your control? Was it an injury? Vacation? Lack of time? Understanding the reason why you had a break can help you avoid a repeat occurrence. For example, suppose an injury was the cause. In that case, there might be mobility exercises or recovery methods that can help prevent a future injury.
Once you understand the why behind your time away from training, next think about why it’s important for you to make a comeback. Why do you want to re-establish this habit? Understanding the purpose behind making a comeback increases the chance that you’ll stick with it now.
2. Set SMART Goals.
Take some time to think about your goals. As you come up with these goals, use the SMART goal framework: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-based. Using this framework will help you clearly define what you want to work toward. You’ll also have a way of measuring your progress and a timeline to work within. You’ll also ensure that your goals are realistic and relevant to your current level of fitness.
3. Create Accountability.
When you choose to train is entirely your choice. However, if you’re someone who struggles with following through with your plan, first know that you’re now alone. But training with a group can be a great solution to this problem because it creates accountability. Once you sign up for group classes, you’re guaranteed to meet some likeminded people who share similar interests and goals.
4. Plan for Potential Setbacks.
Another element of your comeback strategy is to plan for future setbacks. Things will happen beyond your control that will disrupt your routine. You can’t prevent sick days or work trips, but you can make a plan for staying on track (as much as possible). If you know you’ll be away from the gym for a few weeks and not able to train, then make a plan for how you’ll get back on track as soon as you’re able to return.
